Balkenhol studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg under Ulrich Rückriem. After teaching at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe in 1992. Sculptures, reliefs and drawings as well as lithographs and woodcuts are his primary means of expression and wood is his most important material. People are at the center of his work.
