Maximilian Lenz was born on 4 October 1860 in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts under M. Rieser and Ferdinand Laufberger and at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Carl Wurzinger, Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger. Thereafter he studied in Rome. At the beginning of the 1890s, he went to Buenos Aires, where he designed banknotes. Alongside his painting activity, he also designed craft objects. In 1897, he was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession. Lenz died in Vienna on 18 May 1948.
