1861 – Vienna – 1945

Landscape, genre and still life painter

At the turn of the century, Moll was the most important Viennese painter alongside Klimt. In 1881 he became a student and friend of Jacob Emil Schindler. After the latter’s early death, Moll married Schindler’s widow. In 1897 he became friends with Gustav Klimt. Together with Wilhelm Bernatzik, Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Olbrich, he founded the Vienna Secession, the president of which he was in 1900/01. In 1905 he separated from the Secession to join the ‘Klimt Group’. Moll also produced some colour woodcuts for ‘Ver Sacrum’ from 1898 to 1901.

His villa at Hohe Warte in Vienna was planned by his friend and fellow artist Josef Hoffmann and developed into a social and artistic meeting point in Vienna.
