After an apprenticeship as an enamel painter, Gabriel was a student of Josef Hoffmann and Adele von Stark (enamel class) at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna from 1912-14. After his training he worked for the Wiener Werkstätte and was also involved in the portfolio work "Die Mode" from 1914/15.
