Josef Hoffmann designed a small chest like the present one in the years after 1910. Altogether three similar chests are known today: one was painted by Gertrude Balabene, another by Renate Tschurtschentaler. The present one seems to be the most important, painted as it was by Franz von Zülow himself, who decorated furniture for the Wiener Werkstätte from 1908 onwards.
