After an apprenticeship as a goldsmith and attending the Handwerker- und Kunstgewerbeschule Bielefeld, Tümpel studied at the Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar from the fall of 1922. He studied with Johannes Itten and Paul Klee, among others, and worked in Oskar Schlemmer's stage workshop. In 1924 he was accepted into László Moholy-Nagy's metal workshop at the Bauhaus.
