Werkstätte Hagenauer was founded in Vienna in 1898 by Carl Hagenauer (1872-1928), a multi-award-winning representative of early Viennese modernism. But it was primarily the creations of his two sons, Karl Hagenauer (1898-1956) and Franz Hagenauer (1906-1986), that made the company one of the most successful arts and crafts metalworking companies of the early 20th century. "They were designers before the term had even been invented." (Otto Breicha 1974) Karl Hagenauer (1898-1956) fundamentally modernized the workshop with a highly successful line of designs, including tableware, sports sculptures, lamps, brass animals, and others, characterized by clearly contoured and functional design, great craftsmanship, and perfect mastery of technique and materials. The ironic, sometimes fun, sometimes sophisticated character of the motifs made especially his miniatures unique. In the 1930s, wood was added as a new material to the predominant brass. In addition to Karl, his younger brother Franz now also designed the first of his later famous heads made of hammered sheet brass. The products of the Hagenauer brand were world-famous and were exported especially to the USA.
